How To Hold A Mehndi Or Henna Cone

By | June 27, 2012

A cone is one of the best tools for professional henna artist. Cones allow us to make fine lines. You can hold a cone by nestling it between your thumb, palm and first finger. Try not to hold the cone or squeeze from the tip end, this will weaken your control and paste may spill out from the sides. Slowly squeeze the cone with the palm of your hand and fingers to create an even line of paste. For extra control rest the weight of your hand on your little finger.

The below pictures will further guide you in holding a cone.

I am learning how to use the cone, and this article was very interesting. I would like to know something though, I am not sure if I am using too much strength with the cone, because most of the times since the line is fat, it damages the design I make 🙁 and if I try to use less strength, its so thin the line breaks, how can someone know, when it is the “right” amount? I have really practiced a lot and its a little bit improved, but still there.

The amount of strength depends on the thickness of line you want. Right amount of strength together with right amount of speed of applying is necessary while applying henna. You rush that’s why your thin line breaks. Apply it slowly and it won’t break. Slowly squeeze the cone with the palm of your hand and fingers to create an even line of paste. For extra control rest the weight of your hand on your little finger. Moreover practice makes a man perfect is a famous slogan. Practice hard and you will become prefect.

That means either your cone is too old or freeze or you are not getting appropriate amount of henna to the tip. While applying henna try to use a fresh cone. Secondly, bring appropriate amount of henna to the tip, bringing less henna will get the henna stuck inside the cone. Thirdly, make sure that you made a nice hole in the tip, tiny hole in the tip can also cause sticking of henna. Follow these instructions and practice hard as it is a famous slogan “Practice makes a man perfect”. I hope you will learn to hold a cone soon. Best of luck. 🙂

Hi Hannah. Initially holding a cone may give you some pain but eventually you will become habitual and you will not feel any pain or discomfort. For now I will advice you to take breaks. Hold a cone for sometime then when you start feeling pain leave it and wait for 2 to 3 minutes, give you hand a little rest and then start applying again. 🙂

      Hi Amrita,
      Thanks for liking our post.
Hold the cone near the middle closer to tip but not too close. First push the paste to tip and then break the cone above the point you are holding it. Here breaking doesn’t means cutting, breaking refers to folding it; like now the cone is in two portions. Start applying the design. After some use of paste, unfold the cone and push more paste to the tip the again break it and apply. Breaking the cone is not necessary but this will make it easy for you to hold the cone. If you don’t break it and keep it straight this will become very difficult. If you are using short cone then there is no need to fold, this recommendation is for long and big cone. Break the cone and let the top part of the cone rest on your thumb. Hope this information helped you. 🙂

Hi, it will took time to become perfect. The most important tip is that don’t rush while applying henna; apply it slowly and calmly whether it took 1 hour or 2. Another most important thing is that check the tip of the cone, to apply perfectly the tip should be thin and the hole of the cone should be small. Last but most important don’t lose hope and practice hard because practice makes a man perfect. Best of luck. 🙂
